Paolo Sorrentino: «Italy is one of the most beautiful Nation in the world». by Pietro Porcella in New York

I was one of the dozens people waiting at lunch time in the  long line outside  the Lincoln Center Theater in New York. I wanted  to make sure I could attend one of the shows of Paolo Sorrentino's  masterpiece, in one of  NY hardcore theatre.

The night before, watching the Golden Globe on TV, I felt proud of the nice presentation and the comments for the best foreigner movie. I appreciate the final words of our film director while thanking for the trophy received. "Italy, a nation that I love, with some problems but still one of the most beautiful in the world." he said.
How do the American people feel about Italian people and the italian style ?

I was curious to know. Has our stereotype changed in the American view since  'La Dolcevita' di Fellini?
At Lincoln theatre the place was full. Mainly with american people of middle age very well dress.
The subtitles in English did not pay off and the public could not really appreciate the humor of  the original italian dialoge. Often, me and my wife Kirsten were the only one laughing in the theater, 'cause we could understand the silly slang of Carlo Verdone & company.  
Toni Servillo, by the way,  was the perfect interpreter in the role of the Italian 'viveur' in the community of the show business and media related.
Rome city come out magnificent in the picture of Sorrentino. Beautiful scenarios of the ancient city and that counts a lot in the mind of the Americans.

The movie has a lot of the Fellini style in an Italian status reprojected in this new millennium.
Carlo Verdone and Sabrina Ferilli, even without a leading role, gave a great interpretation as well as the old silent nun (with a vague similitude to 'Madre Teresa di Calcutta') They were  all parts of the incomprehensible frustrated human minds in the commistion of clerical/acting party ad presented by Sorrentino.
The only negative note I read next day on the New York Times is that the movie is too slow sometime. I found it pleasant and stupid enough to be successful in America.
The great new today is that The Great Beauty made it in the short list for Hollywood. I believe is going to be the first italian movie to win the Oscars after La vita è bella di Benigni in 1999.
On March 2nd at the Academy Awards in Hollywood, Sorrentino can really walk away with the most prestigious Oscar. Tanti auguri  belli.

"La grande bellezza" in America

Paolo Sorrentino: “L’Italia è una delle più belle nazioni del mondo”. Dal nostro corrispondente Pietro Porcella

Ero uno della varie dozzine di persone in fila che attendevano all'ora di pranzo fuori dal Teatro Lincoln Center di New York. Volevo assicurarmi di avere i biglietto per lo spettacolo serale del film di Paolo Sorrentino in uno dei teatri cult  della Grande Mela.
La notte prima guardando i Golden Globe alla TV mi son sentito orgoglioso per la grande presentazione al successo come miglior film straniero. Il commento finale di Sorrentino ricevendo il premio: "L'Italia è la nazione che amo. Una nazione, che seppur con tanti problemi rimane una delle più belle al mondo".
Cosa pensano gli americani delle persone italiane e dell'Italian-style?
Ero curioso di sapere. Il nostro stereotipo come è cambiato negli occhi  degli americani, sin dal tempo de "La dolcevita" di Fellini?
Al Lincoln center il teatro era pieno allo spettacolo delle 7. Principalmente  persone di mezza età molto ben vestite. Prima considerazione: i sottotitoli non rendono giustizia allo spirito del film ed il pubblico non può apprezzare le battute in italiano degli attori. Spesso io e mia moglie eravamo gli unici a ridere in teatro  perché gli altri non capivano il fine umorismo di Verdone & company.

Toni Servillo, in ogni caso, è stato il perfetto interprete del ruolo del 'viveur' nel mondo dello show-business, del teatro impossibile, dei media potenti. La città di Roma ne esce magnificata dalla fotografia di Sorrentino. Bellissimi scenari nella città eterna  e questo conta molto negli occhi degli americani. Il film ha molto dello stile Felliniano riproiettato in una Italia di inizio terzo millennio. Carlo Verdone e Sabrina Ferilli, pur senza un ruolo principale, son protagonisti di una grande prestazione, così come la vecchia suora che sale le scale in ginocchio e ricorda fisicamente Madre Teresa di Calcutta.
Tutti personaggi di Sorrentino che rispecchiano la frustrazione spesso incomprensibile del pensiero umano  quando si vive immersi sia nel mondo dello spettacolo che in quello clericale.
L'unica nota negativa che ho letto il giorno dopo nelle pagine degli spettacoli del New York Times diceva che il film a tratti è troppo lento. Io l'ho trovato sufficientemente stupido e piacevole per avere successo negli Stati Uniti.
Oggi la bella notizia che The great beauty ce l'ha fatta ad entrare nelle nomination per Hollywood. Potrebbe essere il primo film italiano a vincere la statuetta dopo il successo di Benigni con La vita è bella.
Si, il 2 Marzo agli Academy Awards Sorrentino può realmente andar via col più prestigioso Oscar. Good luck !
